Utilising tools to build the capacities of local governments and networks to boost the implementation of the SDGs

From the 8th to the 10th of April, the SDG Localization - SDG Cities team bolstered efforts with the Instituto de Fomento y Asesoría Municipal (IFAM), the Ministerio de Política y Planificación Nacional (MIDEPLAN), and the Resident Coordinator's Office of Costa Rica to strengthen the Red de Cantones Promotores de los ODS (SDG Cantons Network).

The SDG Cantons Network is a national initiative that seeks to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs at the local level in Costa Rica. Through a comprehensive approach to the varied types of challenges faced by the cantons across the territory, the network brings tailored tools that can improve their capacities. The initiative was born in 2021 and currently includes 48 out of the 84 cantons of the country.

During the three-day journey, the teams shared the current local challenges and the available tools that can build capacities for urban service delivery. From San José to Sarchí, the delegation noted the valuable effort that the network has made and envisioned the next steps to strengthen this outstanding process.

The collaboration between the SDG Localization - SDG Cities team, IFAM, MIDEPLAN, and the Resident Coordinator's Office highlights the commitment to localizing sustainable development efforts in Costa Rica. By leveraging collective expertise and resources, the partners strive to empower cantons to effectively implement and monitor the SDGs.

Moving forward, the collaboration envisions expanding the reach and impact of the SDG Cantons Network with UN-Habitat’s SDG Localization and the SDG Cities Global Initiative, fostering stronger partnerships, and enhancing the network's capacity-building initiatives. Through sustained collaboration and commitment, Costa Rica's local communities are poised to play a pivotal role in advancing the global agenda for sustainable development.
